Review Text

Clusters of exercises demonstrate various aspects of scientific methodology; independent investigation on the part of the student is facilitated but not focal. The authors work from the simple to the complex, starting with the statement and limitation of problems to be studied, and going to observation, data collection, measurement, the combination of measurement and calculation, and finally to the design of experiments with proper attention to simplifying and controlling the study. The format is to present background material from which a problem arises and then to state the problem, at least obliquely. Under the heading "Try These Procedures," fairly detailed instructions are given, and while suggestions are made to go beyond what is specified, it is quite possible not to: the appearance of being open-ended is deceptive. However, the investigations are generally constructed so that the reader would not know the result ahead of time, nor are the answers given. Overall they exemplify the rudiments effectively and illustrate the wide range of everyday areas that might be examined. (Kirkus Reviews)
