Access to this very desirable knowledge it is now proposed to render more easy and possible by presenting to the many readers of the Insurance Times a catalogue raisanne, or bibliographical dictionary, of all the writers and their works upon insurance topics and the co-ordinate branches of national and commercial law, constituting the "great law-merchant," upon which the theory and law of insurance in all of its branches are founded, in so far at least as the resources at command will afford the proper material for such a purpose. There is no similar work in existence, in any language; the information to be contained in the proposed catalogue is the result of years of labor, and has been gathered, item by item, from sources innumerable. It is not for a moment presumed, however, that the list of authors and their works, as presented, is complete, embracing the name of every writer and of every book upon the subject proposed; it is simply an attempt to afford a nucleus around which may be gathered from time to time, and as opportunity offers, an amount of insurance bibliography--now sadly deficient--that will eventually form an addition to insurance literature, the value of which can, at the present time, scarcely be realized.
