To detect its use pour into a bottle a small quantity of milk supposed to contain the preservative, lean the bottle slightly to one side and pour into it a little sulphuric acid (oil vitrio) such as can be purchased at any drug store. If a purple line appears between the acid and the milk it is sutlicient evidence that formaline has been used.. 3. The difference between whole cream and skimmed milk cheese can be demonstrated by adding some vinegar to fresh milk on which the cream has not risen, or to milk that has the cream thoroughly stirred through it.
