The combined population of the Chicago State Hospital and the Kankakee State Hospital is nearly 7,000 patients, in addition to more than 1,000 employees. As these two institutions receive the bulk of the commitments from the Chicago Courts it is necessary to make transfers to other institutions in order to prevent over-crowding. There are now 17,200 insane in the Illinois State Hospitals and 23,000 inmates in the entire group of State charitable institutions under the jurisdiction of the Board of Administration. DEATH OF MRS. MATTIE ADOLPH. Mrs. Mattie Adolph, supervising nurse of the Jacksonville State Hospital, died on January 3, 1917, after a very short illness. Mrs. Adolph was a graduate of the training school of the Watertown State Hospital and after serving in that institution in various capacities was transferred to the Jacksonville State Hospital, having passed the promotional examination for supervising nurse. She took the examination for chief nurse and at the time of her death stood at the head of the list. It was her hope and that of the board that either the institution at Dixon or Alton would be opened last year, in which case her ambition to head the nursing force of a State hospital would have been realized. Mrs. Adolph was a splendid example of a life devoted to the profession of caring for the sick. She was wholly wrapped up in her profession and was an inspiration to all who were associated with her.
