Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ...and reduction formula: may be, it is welfor a student to be independent of them, and able to integrate complicated expressions for himself by the exercise of fundamental principles. The present work, which embodies the author's successful experience with his classes for the past few years, has this object in view, and gives a method of integration, which he calls the "triangle method," and which is founded upon trigonometric principles. The result of applying this method is that the student gains proficiency not only in the integration of trigonometric differential expressions, but also in the transformation of algebraic expressions into trigonometric and exponential ones, and vice versa. The first part of the book contains an introduction by Professor Webb, in which he discusses the principles involved in these methods, and gives some illuminating views of imaginary quantities, exponentials, and analytical trigonometry. Then follow the chapters by Professor Gunther on trigonometric differentials and rationalization by trigonometric substitution, in which he works out, clearly and systematically, the methods of integration by trigonometric and imaginary substitutions, and illustrates them by numerous examples. This volume is not intended to replace the ordinary text-books, but rather to supplement them, and give the student a clearer view of the principles involved in calculus, and a better grasp of the work of integration, and may be heartily commended to both teachers and learners.
