Review Text

A sketchy, indifferently written overview of the major Plains tribes, touching on everything from clothing, horses and buffalo hunting to wars, sign language and reservation life today. Coverage is superficial, whether the topic is significant or relatively trivial. Sheppard states that "the name Piegan meant 'Poor Robes' " but doesn't mention why; and, more important, the chapter on religion - except for noting a belief that "all living objects" (?) have souls - is devoted to the more curious or spectacular aspects of ceremonies. There is no evidence of organization beyond the card file stage as Sheppard limps along, right through a history of "how the West was lost" and the surely unnecessary announcement that the Indians were "not uncivilized" and had "many grievances" against the whites. Dispensable. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
