He is one of the men who is daily upholding the finest teachings and principles of the University." 1883 Alonzo Dale Moffett, A.B. '83, A.M. '89, of Elwood, Ind., died at the Robert Long Hospital at Indianapolis, January 9, following an operation. Mr. Moffett was born on a farm in Owen county, October 10, 1859. He received his common school education in that county and graduated from the Spencer high school. He was ambitious for a higher education--and after graduating from Indiana University he took a postgraduate course at Johns Hopkins. He was successively a teacher in the schools at Tipton, Ind., a civil engineer for the Burlington railroad in Wyoming, then returned to school work, being the superintendent of schools at Peru, Ind., and Decatur, Ind. Newspaper work appealed to him, because of the fact that he felt that he could do good in the moulding of public sentiment and in 1897 he became the owner and editor of the Elwood Daily Record. His influence in his community will live long after him. How well he measured up to high standards with his fellow editors was proven in the fact that he was the president of the Indiana Democratic Association and the Northern Indiana Association of Editors and was...
