At this point the adventure takes on a truly dramatic character. With a view to the secrecy necessary to the hopefulness of the enterprise, a set of instructions which was made public, and the aim of which was to divert attention from the real object, commanded Colonel Clark to enlist seven companies of men to act as militia, the further language of the instructions conveying the idea that the purpose was for the protection of Kentucky.
