Review Text

While we wait for Pears to come up with another Instance of the Fingerpost here's a welcome addition to his Jonathan Argyll series. Argyll is teaching baroque art to foreign students in Rome, but has not lost his art-dealer's investigative touch. Meanwhile, Flavia, newly married to Jonathan, has been appointed acting head of the Italian Art Theft Squad. She is concerned that her youth and gender will put her at an immediate disadvantage - especially when she is summoned to see the Italian Prime Minister - but this turns out to be the least of her worries when she hears what he has to say. A great painting, on loan to the government for a major exhibition, has been stolen and a ransom demanded. It must be recovered with no publicity - and no ransom must be seen to be paid. Soon, Flavia is in danger of her life, and following a paper trail that leads straight to the door of one of the most powerful men in the country. As if this were not enough to tax even the considerable energies of both Jonathan and Flavia, Flavia's old adversary, the elderly and accomplished art thief Mary Verney has turned up on the scene, and a whole new mystery unfold around her. Art lovers will derive great plesure from the puzzle of the picture at the centre of the story, while the twisting but plausible plot will keep even the most demanding crime fan absorbed.
