In the old we see the nobler part of human nature separated from the alloy, and the pure metal shows but the brighter for the ordeal it has passed. It is not only pleasant, but profitable, to be with and converse with the aged, for they have in life experienced, perhaps, more and more' varied vicissitudes than may fall to our lot; and from them we may expect to derive actual knowledge. For, oh let but the heart be kind, Let beauty linger in the mind, And even age appears refined-Age even can delight: Till life, like day's departing ray, Dies on the breast of heaven away, And takes an angel's flight. This is pre-eminently and emphatically true of the subject of the present sketch, who, we believe, is the oldest acting local preacher now living. Northrop was born on March 19th, 1799, being the son of John and Ann Northrop. He was baptized on May 5th of the same year. This is verified by a copy of the certificate before us as we write, it having been issued in printed form about four years ago, to please the curious and to satisfy doubters. This interesting document contains the following note at the foot: --"I hereby certify that the above is a correct "extract from the Register of Baptisms for Kipping " Chapel, Thornton, for the year 1799." Then follows the signature of the then minister, A. S.
