Not illustrated. 1920 edition. Excerpt: ... the inside again. The object in covering the box with cotton laid in wet paint is to make sure that the box will be water tight under all conditions. It is therefore necessary that great care be used to have all overlapping pieces tight and smooth and well sealed with paint, the same as a deck covering of an ocean liner. A pipe extends up from the top of the box, as shown in Fig. 2, through which the rubber tube extends that operates the shutter on the camera. A hole the size of the pipe must therefore b e left in the center of the box on top. The pipe may be any reasonable length. It is screwed into a faceplate after being coated with red lead. The faceplate is then bolted to the top of the box as shown. A large washer of felt that has been soaked in oil is placed between the faceplate and the box top, and this, onto when bolted down snugly, makes a perfect water-tight connection. The same method is used on the opening in the side of the box. The front glass, which should be of good clear, thick stock, is bedded in putty. If this is done properly it will be water tight. To operate the apparatus first place the camera inside the box, drop a long rubber tube down through the pipe, and connect it with the shutter of the camera. The other end should have a rubber bulb attached to it. Place the camera inside the box, with its lens close to the glass front, and fasten it there. Withdraw the plate holder; slide and bolt the cover on the side of the box, .making sure the oiled felt washer is in place. Place two sand bags, one on each side of the box, as shown in the illustration, and fasten them there, then lower the box from a boat or raft until it rests firmly on the bottom. When ready, make the exposure and then haul up the whole thing, .show more
