Review Text

I received an advance copy of Tailoring: A Complete Course on Making a Professional Suit from the publisher (Fox Chapel Publishing) and I am really taken with it. I own several books on tailoring but this one goes into greater depth in many areas that the others don't cover, like linings. I have it open as I plod along on my vintage jacket. Pub date is 3/1/11. I'll do a more thorough review of this book and the other two books in the Illustrated Guide to Sewing series-Couture Techniques and Garment Construction-as we get closer to the pub date.

Review quote

It's not very often we find books which explain how to make garments for the men in our lives but this book gives comprehensive instruction on how to make perfect fitted tailored suits for both man and women. An essential reference book, it guides you through the process of making classically tailored suits. The first chapter contains essential advice on choosing the correct fabric, which often causes dilemmas before the sewing is even started - before explaining the tools and techniques required to produce professional results. Making pattern adjustments is also comprehensively covered and construction instructions and finishing techniques are detailed and extensively backed up with lots of clear diagrams. Not for the outright beginner, these books provide in-depth instruction on creating classic wardrobe basics and professional clothing for both men and women. Readers learn how to select patterns that fit their body shape and measurements, choose fabrics, and construct seams, cuffs, collars, and waistbands. I was fortunate enough to receive a pre publication copy of this book to review. I will say, I have been making clothing for myself and my family for over 35 years. This book will be a great addition to my sewing library. This book is a very thorough, informative book on how to tailoring, how to make a professional suit. This book details choosing and preparing fabrics, the tools and techniques needed, the steps for making a man or women's jacket and making tailored trousers. Everything you need to know to make a suit is included with many helpful illustrations.
