Archereau and Carre made similar statements in 1877 concerning the salts of calcium, magnesium and strontium incorporated in the paste of carbon, while Jablochkoff employed clay and kaolin to fill the central cores and insulate his carbons. In a French patent of 1899, Bremer claims all carbons containing more than 5 per cent. of mineral matter with the additions of a flux. In another patent he claims fluorides, bromides and iodides of lime which he believed gave a better tint of yellow than the other salts of lime. In 1879 Edward Weston of Newark took out a patent on carbons using fluorides, double fluorides, etc., and also designed the first commercial flaming arc, or "electric candle," as he called it. These lamps to the number of about 150 were manufactured by the Weston Machine Co., of Newark, but were not a commercial success owing to the fact that the yellow color of the light was objected to. His patent No. 210,380 was notable for the fact that it called attention to the making of carbons with cores, and the analogous English patent defeated Siemens in his claim to this invention. A number of American inventors from time to time brought out carbons designed to increase and improve the quality of the light. Among those can be mentioned Braunsdorf who in 1880 designed a carbon composed of a metallic tube filled with carbon mixed with lime, magnesia, alumina, soda, and strontium. In 1891 Roberts made pencils composed of metal and nonconducting refractory materials, for instance iron tubes filled with a metallic chromate or with the oxide nitrate or other salts of chromium.
