Excerpt: ...year, it has been stated--usually by physicians of other states and by those in Illinois who desire to remove to other states--that the majority of the members of the Illinois State Medical Society look unfavorably upon the manner in which the Illinois State Board of Health carries out the provisions of the Medical Practice Act, toward the older practitioners of other states who desire to engage in practice in Illinois. It has been frequently contended that it is the earnest wish of the State Medical Society that the State Board of Health should admit these older physicians on their licenses, obtained in other states upon presentation of diplomas, instead of subjecting them to an examination as the Illinois law requires. So frequent and so insistent did these'assertions become in the early part of the present year, that the Secretary of the State Board of Health took counsel with several leading members of the State Society for the purpose of determining the best method of learning the real sentiment and wishes of the Society at the present time. It-may be remarked here, parenthetically, that the present law, which provides for the examination of all applicants, was enacted at the instance of the Legislative Committee of the State Medical Society in 1899; that a bill of which the present law in the outcome, was unanimously endorsed by the State Medical Society at the Galesburg meeting in 1898; that another bill, also providing for the examination of all applicants, was unanimously approved by the Society at its meetings in Quincy in 1902 and in Chicago in 1903, and was introduced in the General Assembly in 1903 at the instance of the Legislative Committee of the Society, this latter bill bearing also the endorsement of the Illinois...show more
