Review Text

For one of the most prominent British New Wavers of the Sixties, Moorcock has written some very tame science fiction. This novel - first published in paperback in 1970 - is an inoffensive effort set in a future Ice Age more severe than any past one. The setting is neatly handled, with good rousing descriptions of ice sailing (the only means of transportation in a culture lapsed into semi-barbarism) and some ingenuity in such details as the careful preservation of precious ancient nylon and fiberglass. The plot - an expedition to the mythical Northern city of New York - is encumbered with a silly love story and a lot of cardboard family intrigues. (Kirkus Reviews)
