Review Text

Parallel plots and clear development of character make this a fascinating read. McGregor's starting point is the tragic disappearance in the Arctic of the Franklin Expedition of 1847. Doug Marshall, researching this story in the 21st century, is himself nearly lost, while feisty reporter, Jo Harper, against her own inclination, must get his story. The chemistry between these two sparks the modern plot and the theme of love and jealousy. The story moves almost seamlessly between present-day Cambridge and the 19th-century Arctic. The fateful progress of the Franklin expedition is told through the eyes of young crewman Gus Peterman; as the Terror and her sister ship Erebus lie trapped in the ice a mysterious sickness claims lives already threatened by cold and starvation, and the struggle for survival becomes increasingly grotesque. The interweaving of the plots and the creation of character and setting are beautifully balanced, and the scenes of the ice landscapes are truly chilling. This book is well crafted and an enjoyable and worthwhile read. (Kirkus UK)show more
