Review Text

From Alvar Aalto (the Finnish architect and designer) to zydeco (dance music originating in Louisiana), this dictionary includes all the arts, with 6000 entries on the leading people and movements, the key styles and terms, as well as chronologies, 1000 quotations and full cross-referencing. Its coverage is comprehensive - taking in architecture, artistic theory, cinema, classical literature, craft and design, dance, fashion, literary terms, world literature, classical music, pop music, mythology, painting, photography, sculpture and theatre - and extending throughout history up to the present day. Any dictionary which encompasses the Aeneld and Catullus as well as Madonna and Martin Amis is obviously well-placed to provide a very useful reference source on almost anything cultural and artistic for which you need information. This should easily find the wide readership it deserves. (Kirkus UK)show more
