Description

They're the Chosen--Winchester, Remington and Colt--brothers trained to hunt down supernatural beings using the latest steam-powered gadgetry. It's a hard legacy to shoulder, and it's about to get a lot more dangerous. . .

A Devil Of A Job

Colt Jackson has gotten his name on many a wanted poster with success in the family business: hunting supernaturals across the frontier. Lately, though, there's a sulfur stink in the wind and the Darkin population is exploding. A rift in the worlds is appearing. To close it, Colt will have to do the unthinkable and work with a demon to pass arcane boundaries no human alone can cross.

Except when he summons his demon, he doesn't get some horned monstrosity: he gets a curvy redheaded succubus named Lilly, who's willing to make a bargain to become human again. He also gets Lilly's secret expertise on the machinations on the dark side of the rift. And her charm and cleverness help to get them out of what his silver-loaded pistol and mechanical horse can't. Of course, when all hell breaks loose, he might have to sacrifice his soul. But what's adventure without a little risk?

Our customer reviews

The Jackson brothers are considered the Chosen. Winchester, Remington and Colt were trained to hunt down supernatural beings. In the first book in this trilogy we are introduced to Colt Jackson, the youngest of the three brothers. Meyers starts the book with Colt's first experience with a demon and right away we are shown the bravery inside of him. You also see that Colt has always felt left behind because his father tried to protect him from the world that his brothers were already deep into. Unfortunately, a demon took that choice away from Cy and he was forced to train his youngest to be a hunter like his brothers. Now Colt only knows hunting and strives to live up to his father's notorious reputation. He is an outlaw whereas his brothers have set up shop in respectable jobs and have turned their back on the hunting life. Colt feels it is his responsibility to find all the pieces to the Book of Legion before humanity perishes. To do this, he must pair up with a demon. The demon who shoes up is a feisty succubus, Lily, with an agenda of her own. Lilly has been studying the legend looking for a way out of her bargain with Rathe (part vampire, part archangel and all demon lord) who made her a succubus after offering a deal to save her sister. Rathe has his own agenda, revenge, against Colt after he killed his baby girl (who was a vampire). Knowing that eventually Colt will succumb to Lilly's advances, he sends her to help Colt find his piece of the Book. Neither banked on falling in love and on this Indiana Jones adventure find that they will do anything to save each other's life. Loved all the fun steampunk attributes of this book combined with a western theme. Marley Turlock was one of my favorite characters. He is the inventor that builds all the Jackson boys toys. The best one is Tempus, the mechanical horse, of Colts. If you love steampunk you will love The Hunter and will look forward to the next book and reading about another delicious Jackson brother!show more

Of course, when all hell breaks loose, he might have to sacrifice his soul. But what's adventure without a little risk? Colt was only fourteen years old when his life was changed when he was attacked by a demon. He had been left at home to do some chores while his father and two older brothers were out hunting. Three brothers all named after famous weapons. They were Hunters, a calling that goes back hundreds of years in their family. Colt wasn't supposed to become a Hunter at such a young age, but after the attack on him left his older brother Winchester with an axe wound to his upper thigh. Now twenty four years old, Colt was on a number of wanted posters. His career as a Hunter has him travelling all around the west. He's stopped into the town of Wickenburg to get some ice, ice water that is. When the nearby mines flooded someone got the bright idea of installing freezing units into them and supplying ice to anyone who wanted to pay the price. He's in a bar right now, and realizes that there's the smell of sulfur in the air. A telltale sign that a demon is nearby. Colt is approached by one of the dance hall girls who propositions him. After talking for a minute or two the girl morphs into a vampire and starts to attack him saying, "Now, Hunter, you will die". He immediately pulls his sting shooter and tells her "Ladies first" and zaps her. This is our entry into the world of, and the Legend of the Hunters and their Chronicles. Colt is on a mission to destroy the monsters and to do that he must go on a treasure hunt of sorts to find the means of fulfilling it.
