Review Text

How To Be Your Own Best Friend was a bestseller, One psychiatrist called it "treating the disease with more of the disease." But a lot of people bought it, and, presumably Benefitted By It. So here's some more, snatched up by the book clubs and serialized in the Ladies Home Journal. The format is different this time. Instead of a hypothetical conversation between an analyst and a yearning psyche, this one's virtually written in blank verse (and on only one third of each page, since the authors have opted to write vertically instead of horizontally). Something about the rhythm of the thing seemed familiar. And then it dawned: Eloise, without the laughs. Listen: "If you affirm yourself in a certain way that means you are turning your back on all other ways of being. It means you can't have everything. It means you can't do everything. It means you can't be everything. It means you can't please everybody."Especially us.
