When the nurse handed me my son, I looked in his eyes and he looked in my eyes, and I knew what he was. The supreme explorer. Vulnerable and ignorant, a child asks the ontological question, what's it all about, with ferocity and purity. My son had no words, no experience, but the mind, gift and instrumentality of the gods, was whole. And his eyes said, in the safety of my eyes, "What the?" We didn't correct him, we didn't tell him what to think, how to feel, who to love, what to know, who to worship. We didn't correct his manners, or his grammar, or his choices, or his values. My wife and I became his research assistants, moving behind his investigations, collaborating with him, making knowledge with him. We are born to know, we want to know, we need to know, and our children are the spearpoint of our quest. How do you punish the supreme explorer without correcting, without telling your child what to think and feel? Punishment is not correction. Punishment creates a memory of pain that dampens the desire for the pleasure of a future misbehavior. The problem is we don't want to inflict pain on our children. My wife and I solved the problem.
