For a parent, there are few things more frightening than the thought of one's child or a close family member becoming the victim of trauma. How do I help them cope? Can I help them cope? What if I'm not even able to cope myself? These are some of the automatic responses that could flash through a parent's mind at the prospect of having to deal with an unexpected, painful or traumatic experience, or with the fear or threat of such trauma becoming a reality. These experiences can be damaging and life-changing on many levels, and in many societies they have indeed become an everyday reality. All trauma, although accompanied by loss - often terrifying and terrible loss - gives us an opportunity to put life into perspective, encourages us to evaluate relationships and possibly to shed that which is toxic or unhelpful and to retain that which is healthy. About Meg Fargher

Meg Fargher holds a Master's Degree in English and taught English for a number of years prior to becoming Head of St Mary's School for nine years. After resigning from St Mary's, Meg obtained international accreditation as a mediator. Besides writing and researching, Meg consults and facilitates in the education and management arenas. Together with her husband, Ken, they own a boutique hotel and conference centre in the Magaliesberg and they travel extensively. Meg has two grown-up children and a menagerie of dogs. Dr Helen Dooley holds a PhD from the University of Pretoria and currently consults in private practice in Johannesburg, South Africa. Prior to moving into full-time private practice, Helen was a school psychologist for 10 years. She has been a psychologist for 14 years. She has a passion for cycling, climbing and adventure and has climbed three of the Seven Summits. Helen is married to Rob and they live in Johannesburg with a beautiful dog, William, and a rabbit named George.
