"I swear I was not speaking to you, I was talking to the waiter." " Oh, all right then, we can be friends," said the charmer. " Yes, let's kiss and be friends!" cried Dick, into whose head the wine had mounted. " Not here," she said. " Yes, here, and now; I must, I tell you!" "Very well, just a little one, then," and she opened her big fan and shaded their faces from the others. " I want to dance!" cried Dick, " is there any place where we can dance?" " We can go to the Pandemonium," answered Pattison; " I'm a member, and I can introduce you." " Hurroo!" shouted Dick, so loud that the people at the other tables tumed round and stared. They finished their supper, and at closing time Pattison drove with his partner in a hansom to the Pandemonium, whilst Dick followed in another with the dark divinity who had fallen to his lot. In a little pokey street off Oxford Street was the Pandemonium Club, and there they alighted. Pattison wrote the name of Thomas ones in a book of visitors, and signed himself as Robert Walker in the column designed to receive the name of the introducing member, and they went into the Club. It was a big ball room, and several couples were dancing, whilst others looked on, smoking and chatting. Dick wanted to dance at once, so he led his partner out and launched upon a waltz.
