E se ciò che caratterizza in modo specifico Homo sapiens fosse la capacità di orientare le proprie azioni immaginando varie possibilità che si articolano nel futuro - cioè la "prospezione"? La storia della psicologia è stata fino ad oggi dominata dall'idea che il comportamento sia guidato dalla memoria e dalle proprie esperienze passate, o centrato sul presente e orientato dalla percezione e dalla motivazione. Homo prospectus ribalta completamente questa prospettiva, ponendo un nuovo modello per il futuro. Individuando e definendo i processi cognitivi attraverso i quali opera la prospezione, gli autori ne esplorano il ruolo in riferimento ad alcuni aspetti esistenziali come il libero arbitrio, l'etica, l'invecchiamento, ma anche rispetto ad elementi più propriamente psicologici, come il razionale di alcuni approcci terapeutici.
