In this grace Dr. Schaff is not the peer of Neander. When facts bear against him. he seems not only to realize it, but at times he almost forgets that he is simply an historian, and steps aside to do a little special pleading in selfdefense. We should regret to say this, if it should seem to lessen the value of the general commendation we desire to give of this great work of Dr. Schaff. But we hope our candor in this matter will strengthen our testimony to the very great value of the work, when taken as a whole.
