Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ...the day school, but the only available schoolroom is hardly large enough for the scholars we have. The children love to memorize the Bible verses. As soon as the required number of examples are finished, or the geography lesson digested, they eagerly ask permission to study their Bibles. In a little over two months one girl has memorized the first five chapters of John, and even the little five-year-olds average four or five verses a week. As for the singing, ln-mns take the place of popular songs here; boys whistle them on the street, and after the school hours you can hear snatches of hymns from all quarters. A small neighbor was kept home from school the other day on account of a sore throat, but in the afternoon the school was vastly entertained by hearing her sing, hoarsely but heartily, ten of her favorite hymns from beginning to end. The children are so bright and receptive and quaint that it is a delight to be with them. "Chiquitica," aged five, is typical; she can tell you the name of anv bird, beast or flower she sees; she knows just how her mother cooks every dish; she has a remedy to suggest for every infirmity from chills to smallpox; she knows everv man that passes, and calls out cheerily to inquire after his children, cattle or crops, then turning to me flashes out a terse and striking biography. If she sees me sweeping she flies home for a broom and says she will gladly help; but news flies quickly here, and presently others appear to "help." I have had as many as five little mites at once all trying to wield brooms twice their size. It is dusty help, but very cheering.
