The tick bites a person suffering from the disease and becomes infected, the parasites develop in the body of the tick and may even be transmitted to the offspring of the tick. By biting a well person, the tick may communicate the infection. Various species of ticks have been found to be capable of communicating the disease in this way. It is quite'probable also that various other blood-sucking insects communicate the disease. Scientific discovery is constantly showing the great importance of protection against insects as a means of preventing acute disease. Treatment.--The discovery has recently been made that Salvarsan, commonly known as 606, the remedy discovered by Ehrlich which has been found to be so wonderfully successful in the treatment of syphilis, is a prompt and etficacious remedy in this disease. The symptoms of the malady disappear very quickly after the injection of a dose of 606. This treatment of course can be administered only by a competent physician. In recent epidemics the remedy was found completely successful. The general treatment recommended for fever should be pursued. Ice should be applied to the head to relieve the headache, cool sponging, compresses, and cool enemas, should be used to reduce the temperature. When the pain is severe, it may be relieved by the hot blanket pack, applied once or twice a day for half an hour. The majority of patients have a craving for acid, and may take lemon juice as freely as desired. For the soreness and pain at the pit of"the stomach, apply hot fomentations three or four times a day, fifteen or twenty minutes each time.
