This has got to be the single most definitive and instructive book on home baking I\'ve ever come across. Traditional home baking, high tea cakes, the basics of pastry and scones and cakes and icing. It\'s amazing for a book that was originally published in 1979. It\'s probably an ode to that era when people back in those days did still know how to make such things at home. Where it possibly was common knowledge. Stuff your grandma knows how to make. Not my grandma she\'s 85 and going a bit.. Aside from a sad lack on \'croissant\' making, it has everything from biscuits to cakes (teacake) to fancy cakes (think 2 tiered decorated iced wedding cake), to shortcrust, flaky and rough pastry from scratch. Savoury and sweet alike combined with fantastic photos and step by step photoed instructions and techniques this is a book that needs a reprinting. And that everyone should own should they ever wish to bake at home. I suspect that the things in this book are probably things more aptly learnt at some posh patisserie school and just aren\'t in any of the \'modern\' day cook books. I was lucky enough to stumble across it in an op shop for about $2 although if it cost more I still would\'ve bought it.show more
