Excerpt: ... to have partaken of the food offered her; but although she thus refrained from pouring her sorrows into the ear of her husband, there was One to whom Hannah might fearlessly make them known, and from whom she would be sure to receive comfort; for the purpose, therefore, of seeking the Lord, she repaired to the sanctuary, and therein bitterness of soul she prayed and wept, --prayed with earnestness as only those pray who deeply feel their need of that for which they ask. "O Lord of Hosts, if thou wilt indeed look upon the affliction of thine handmaid and remember her, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then will I give him unto the Lord all the days of his life-" such were the words she spake in her heart, for only her lips moved, her voice was not heard, as in agony of spirit she wrestled with the Lord for the desired blessing. Surely this was true prayer! "The spirit making intercession with groanings that could not be uttered." How unlike the cold and formal petitions, the careless response, the mere lip service by which our God is so often dishonoured and His holy name profaned. Alas! that the dearly-purchased privilege of access to the mercy seat of a reconciled Father in Christ Jesus should be thus carelessly used by those who profess to value it; not such was the example left us by Him who spent whole nights in prayer upon the mountain side, and who could say, " Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me, and I know that thou hearest me always."
