Description

Henry Hart Milman (1791-1868), Dean of St Paul's, London, wrote widely on the subject of Jewish and Christian history during the early nineteenth century. The History of the Jews, first published in 1830, quickly became a standard work. In it is described the progress of the Jewish people from the Patriarchal Age, through the years in Egypt, to the establishment of the Kingdom of David and the building of the Temple at Jerusalem. This is followed by a study of the Jews under Roman rule, the consequent war, and later conflicts between Jews and Christians. The final chapters detail the diaspora and chronicle the settlement of Jews throughout Europe and Asia. A final chapter 'Modern Judaism' presents a world view of Judaism as seen in the early decades of the nineteenth century. Here reprinted in facsimile from the second edition of 1892, the work will be of great value both as n historical source-work and as a general work of reference.show more
