Excerpt from The History of Canada, Vol. 8: 1808-1815 This volume contains the narrative of the war of I812, to the ratification, at Washington, of the Treaty of Ghent, on the i8th of February, 1815. Although the events of the years antecedent to the war cannot be recognized as having been its immediate cause, I have deemed it essential, from their importance, to relate them at some length. As in the preceding volumes, I have given references to the authorities on which my statements are based, to admit of the verification of any disputed point. I have endeavoured in all cases to avoid controversy, and have confined myself to a narra tive of the incidents, as they are presented by contemporary documents.
