Previous to the year 1823, in which year the Synod of New Jersey was organized, the Synods of Pittsburgh, Kentucky, Albany, South Caro lina and Ohio had been erected. In 1823 the origi nal Synod of New York and New Jersey having been divided, this J udicatory took its place among its sis ter Synods, and has now been in existence for a period of thirty-eight years. Its first meeting was held in the First Presbyterian Church in the City of Newark, N. J., in October, 1823, and was opened with a sermon by the venerable and Rev. Dr. John Woodhull, of Freehold: the Rev. Dr. Alexander of blessed memory, was the first Moderator. The Synod then consiste l of the Presbyteries of New Brunswick, Jersey, Newton and Susquehannd - those of Hudson, North River, Long Island and New Yorh remaining to constitute the Synod of New York.
