Description

Hispano Suiza, a firm of sound Spanish tradition and origins, is little known to the new generations today. To those who have heard of the company it usually brings to mind great luxury automobiles made at the Hispano Suiza factories in Barcelona and Paris during the 1920s and 1930s. However in parallel, Hispano Suiza developed other activities of considerable industrial, commercial, and strategic importance - aviation engines produced in Spain and France, and aircraft constructed only in Spain. This book starts with the background circumstances that favored the creation of an indigenous aviation engine in Spain during 1914. Chapter 1 is an in-depth study of the World War I Period, the birth of the first Spanish aircraft construction company, and the first original designs of Spanish aircraft. Chapter 2 studies the creation of the Societe Francaise Hispano Suiza, the first contracts of La Hispano at Guadalajara, and the technology of the first 12-cylinder engines. Chapter 3 studies the technological advances of the Hispano Suiza engines as far as materials are concerned, plus the extensive range developed during the late 1920s.
The first supercharged engines are discussed in Chapter 4, with a review of the aircraft of the Spanish Republic in 1935 and the engine projects of the factory in Barcelona to power them. This finally clarifies the history of the engines under development and the aircraft they were destined to power. Chapter 5 is a detailed study, with unpublished plans, of the C-36 and RBL-36 originally designed by Hispano Suiza, under development at Guadalajara in 1936. Chapter 6 studies the evolution of the company in France during World War II and particulary the new high-performance engine designs, as well as the licenses allowed to Japan, the U.S.S.R, Switzerland, and others by the company.
