Review Text

His own words do tell it best. This collection of Nelson Mandela's speeches, from his address to the annual conference of the African National Congress Youth League in 1951, numerous inspiring speeches during the four decades spent in prison, his famous speech on release from prison in 1990, addresses at the World Aids Conferences, and many others, provide the best possible portrait of a leader and his political career. But beyond a mere portrayal, this excellent biography provides another context as well. Organized thematically and chronologically with each section introduced by contributors who provide great insights, it explores what made Mandela a true fighter for freedom and one of the most compelling figures of his age, and looks at the impact his enormous persona has had on his compatriots, colleagues, and the masses throughout the world. With contributions by Bill Clinton and Kofi Annan, it is a true tribute to Mandela. (Kirkus UK)show more

Review quote

Are there any more words of praise that can be offered to a man descrived as the world's greatest living statesman? This would be incredibly difficult, but by having Mandela's own words tell the story there is little need for much else... Magnificent. PRIDE At it's heart there is a book that should be in every home. SUNDAY HERALD A testament to a man who uniquely combines sweetness with steel. INDEPENDENT A major achievement OBSERVERshow more
