Our customer reviews

"The first book in this trilogy is excellent; Pullman's imagination is on overdrive and the story, setting and characters are fabulous. The second book (The Subtle Knife) takes a different turn, but is also superb storytelling; gripping and enthralling, if a little odd in places. The third book (The Amber Spyglass) if found just plain weird and unsatisfactory. Too many loose ends were left; the story seemed to run out of steam rather than to finish (or even to be left open deliberately, which would have been better). In terms of the 'atheist' message, it is a bit too strong, particularly in the later books, and didn't really add anything to the story. Unneccessary and distracting. Many have compared His Dark Materials to CS Lewis' Narnia Chronicles, saying it's the atheist equivalent - it's not. Where Narnia was an allegory which didn't mention God and can easily be read as just a story, His Dark Materials is more pointedly a promotion of atheism (by demonising the church). Worth a read though."show more
