The house, which is situated amid hill and moorland scenery of the wildest description, is an excellent one, containing dining-room, drawing-room, servants' hall, pantry, with hot and cold water, kitchen, scullery, 7 bed-rooms, 2 dressing-rooms, 3 servants'-rooms, &c. There are also two-stalled stable, coachhouse, kennels, and garden. The nearest railway station and postal and telegraph office is Dalwhinnie, distant about 4 miles. Supplies can be had either from Kingussie or Blair-Athole by rail via Dalwhinnie. CUCHULLIN. This splendid range of sporting country extends to about 60,000 acres, and embraces the whole of the Cuchullin Hills, many of which attain an altitude of over 3000 feet, and form perhaps the most picturesque range of mountains in the kingdom. It is now proposed to convert some 35,000 acres into a deer forest, which it is admirably adapted for, and if this is carried out, 30 to 35 stags ought to be got after the ground is properly stocked. In addition to deer, 600 brace of grouse and a very heavy bag of snipe, plover, woodcock, wild fowl, and hares should also be got. The lodge at Drynoch is amid fine scenery, and contains dining-room, drawing-room, 4 bed-rooms, 1 dressing-room, 5 servants'-rooms, kitchen, butler's pantry, wine and beer cellars, w.c., &c. There are also three-stalled stable, coach-house, 2 good kennels, garden, and keeper's house. west Highland steamers call at Portree, 13 miles from the lodge, and also at Carbost, about 3 miles off. A mail car passes the lodge daily. There is unsurpassed anchorage for yachts in Loch Harport, near the shores of which the lodge is situated. CULLACHY. The shootings of Cullachy, near Fort Augustus, extend to about 20,000 acres. The...show more
