Review Text

Whereas Horace Sippog and the Sirens' Song had a definite, weirdly mystical strain, Kilroy uses the same ingredients to much less effect. Again myth blends with reality and metaphysical visions dance in the main character's head. Adam Bound, young, sensitive, a brilliant composer may or may not have belonged to past ages. Had he walked with the gods, communed with Odin and Loki, and is he designed to search for the holy grail? This also starts out in school, a marvelous music academy where the students pursue sex as diligently as they practice their scales. But there is always an aura about Adam and his distant cousins Beatrice and Maeve. Beatrice the beauty and Maeve the imp. . . Maeve who can throw a genuine curse around. Did she predestine Beatrice's husband to become impotent? In any event Beatrice and Adam become the only true lovers in the book in a brief ecstatic affair after Adam has turned himself into a hermit in pursuit of truth. One senses that this very young author's soul-searching may lead to greater discipline. But not here. It's fey-tal. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
