Review Text

An enterprising, robust version of the Heracles legends, reflecting a sure-footed acquaintance with classical sources. Heracles is born strong and develops accordingly - strangling snakes in his crib, stalking and stripping that lion at eighteen, defeating the Minoans almost single-handedly. He marries, fathers three children, then destroys all he has in a Hera-sent fit of madness. To atone he performs the famous twelve labors - of necessity treated hastily here, but impressive nonetheless. The last chapters treat the older figure, apparently settled but inwardly restless, ultimately destined for a painful and ironic end. A swift and coherent adventure, told with admirable simplicity and zest. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
