Excerpt from Her Provincial Cousin: A Story of Brittany
Turning my head suddenly, I caught sight of another human being only a few hundred yards away. The country was so deserted that I was surprised. The newcomer was a young man, with a wellknit, slender figure of remarkable suppleness and symmetry. He wore a navy blue jer sey and bird, like the fishermen on the coast. He carried a gun in one hand and a game bag over his shoul der. He paid no attention to the old man and myself, but ran past, eagerly on the lookout for something invisi ble to us. He dodged behind every heap of rock or clump of grass to screen himself, and ran crouching at times almost prone on the ground - with a wonderful catlike agility. Presently he dropped on one knee and brought his gun to his shoulder. There was a whir of wings, a quick report, and a bird fell at his feet. He came back with elastic triumph in his step, and as he passed us held up a plump golden plover.
