The other two, which were hung in the Gem Room on either side of a Leighton, are exquisite pieces of colour and handling, "Outward Bound" being the replica of the "Calm Mediterranean" study already mentioned (p. 60). The Old Water-Colour Society's exhibition of this year contained two large drawings, "Off the Hampshire Coast "and "A Pilot Cutter on the Look-out"; these were the last that he showed here. In the spring of 1895 he sent to the New Gallery two works, but it was curious that he should end the series of marine subjects by which he had always been represented there with a landscape, "A West Highland Burn." A large landscape, " Glen Orchy: Storm coming on," formed one of five contributions to the Royal Academy of 1895. The foreground shows "Glen Us a r'ver m spa-e, brown and foaming: n, stern forms of mountains and, above them, a lowering rain-cloud give a vast and sombre dignity to a scene of which the solemnity is unrelieved save by the patch of sunlight gleaming faintly on the green hill beyond. The colour is disposed in broad masses; there are no disturbing details; the spirit of the desolate glen broods over the canvas; the sympathy of the artist with majestic Nature never proclaimed itself more emphatically than here, and yet--it does not satisfy!
