YOU HAVE A PURPOSE - YOU HAVE A VOICE. YOU CAN HAVE FUN, BE A POSITIVE INFLUENCE, AND POSSIBLY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HAVING GUIDELINES REPLACED BACK INTO YOUR SCHOOL. The main characters in this book find a purpose when a sophomore class Treasure Hunt opens their eyes to the fact that they do have a voice, and can influence matters that directly affect them. They learn that they are 'WE THE PEOPLE'. They learn you have to let go of self doubts, hurts, or any hindrance preventing them from grabbing hold and being who they want to be. April, takes place in 1 week in the surrounding area of Kennesaw Mountain National Park in Marietta, Georgia (shown on front & back cover). April, Tim, Sally, G.Joe, Alicia and Aaron are six tight friends who have learned the glue to real friendship is to accept each others faults and virtues. These six friends swim in Eagle Lake, and hike to the summit of Kennesaw Mountain. They ride dirt bikes to challenge Dead Angle Hill, and Harley motorcycles to Baker's where they dance every Friday and Saturday nights. For Ivan's annual charity dance, the Spring Swing, they decorate the gym with a forties and fifties theme. The afternoon of the dance April, Sally and Alicia take over the janitorial duty of cleaning the gym's toilets, sinks and floor for a very pregnant former senior student. The night of the Spring Swing is perfect, with G.Joe and his band, and Paul, Mrs. Rae's son who has Scleroderma, playing his harmonica. Even more perfect after Carter, a classmate, is thrown into the boy's locker room closet by Tim, G.Joe and Aaron, for insulting Lil who is a little overweight. Events of the week center around Mrs. Rae sending her class of sophomores on a Treasure Hunt for the applicable meaning of our Ten Commandments, other than the obvious, for them as 16-year-olds. They become aware how they abuse these laws everyday, that they do have a god other than the God, they do have a graven image, and they all steal. The six friends realize that they didn't have a vote in the removal of these important guidelines of social behavior so they form a petition, titled 'Full Diamonds, We the People', to have them returned to schools. These Ivan High sophomores recognize they have a certain amount of power to choose their daily environment, and to determine their future. They can have fun as teenagers and be responsible citizens at the same time. Much of this self awareness is due to Mrs. Rae, a teacher who is not afraid to touch the lives of her students beyond the classroom. She is cautious but knows her rights as a Social Studies teacher.show more
