'Buy my stepfather's ghost' read the e-mail.

So Jude did.

He bought it, in the shape of the dead man's suit, delivered in a heart-shaped box, because he wanted it: because his fans ate up that kind of story. It was perfect for his collection: the genuine skulls and the bones, the real honest-to-God snuff movie, the occult books and all the rest of the paraphanalia that goes along with his kind of hard/goth rock.
But the rest of his collection doesn't make the house feel cold. The bones don't make the dogs bark; the movie doesn't make Jude feel as if he's being watched. And none of the artefacts bring a vengeful old ghost with black scribbles over his eyes out of the shadows to chase Jude out of his home, and make him run for his life . . .

Review quote

"Hill's book is satisfyingly creepy and bleak, ideal for those who relish a good scare." * WATERSONES' BOOKS QUARTERLY * "A supernatural thriller which is well written, superbly paced, convincingly plotted and populated with intriguing characters, a story that will grip you from first word to last, the embodiment of the phrase page turner, and for a first novel that's damned good going." * BLACK STATIC *

Our customer reviews

The main character of this book is an aging rock star (hence, the Nirvana reference in the title). Basically he pisses some people off and gets tricked into buying a ghost. The ghost is super spooky! The way Hill describe the 'scribbles' for eyes had me freaked out for the duration of the novel. There is an excellent twist and the characters are interesting, likable and a reflection of modern people. This book was so good! I read it after I read another of his novels and I can't get enough of Joe Hill! I'm really enjoying his writing and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys horror.show more
This book was chosen by one of my friends for our book club, and it's definitely something I wouldn't have chosen myself. I don't believe the blurb does itself justice - it all sounded a bit silly and far fetched for me, but it had me flipping the pages almost faster than I could read. Hill's characters are relateable, likeable and grow throughout the story. It does have a shocking twist, of which I think a whole entirely different book could be based. It is absolutely fantastic, I was blown away by it and highly recommend it to everyone - even if you don't think it's your type of book because I certainly didn't think it was mine!show more
