To Juli, one last time
This is my love
This is the sound of my heart
Surely you must understand
Thus begins the legendary and enigmatic Heart of Thomas, by Moto Hagio. Inspired by Jean Delannoy's 1964 film, Les Amitiés Particulieres, The Heart of Thomas was nearly cancelled early in its serialization, in 1974, until Hagio's first trade paperback, The Poe Clan, Volume 1, sold out in a single day, giving her new series a new lease on life. The result was a story more complex, less accessible, and yet so compelling it can be found near or at the top of any list of classic shojo manga. Translated by manga scholar Matt Thorn and packaged with the same loving attention to detail as Hagio's Eisner Award nominated A Drunken Dream, The Heart of Thomas is already the most eagerly anticipated manga translation of the new decade.

Review quote
Moto Hagio is a genius and leader in the style of shojo manga (comics for women readers). [...] The stories aren't about make-up and kitties, though. They're actually deep, complicated, and often deal with family relationships.

Our customer reviews
"Heart of Thomas" is defiantly a manga that will create mixed opinions.
I decided to buy this manga after reading "A Cruel God Reigns" by the same author, as this manga was apparently like a 'kids version' of it. I did indeed enjoy this manga, but I do not think that it holds a candle to Hagio's later works.
The plot of the manga is quite deep and drama-filled. There is no clear main character of the manga and each character's story interweaves with another. This means there is a lot going on at the one time. It's quite gripping though.
The characters themselves are mostly likeable, with the exception of most of the background characters who are constantly getting into fights and shouting at each other. You will feel however that at times some of the more important characters should be seen and not heard.
As for the art, I personally like the 'old-school' manga look. I'm not a fan of the 90s style, but the 80s style that this manga uses is quite charming. There are a lot of long skinny limbs though. No full colour pages are present in this manga, just the occasional pink-shaded section at the start of some chapters. I'm not too sure why the mangaka chose to shade the pictures in pink...
The one thing that really stops me from loving this manga is the ending. I'm not even sure how to describe it, but when I finished this manga my reaction was "Seriously? Huh?". The manga just stops dead. I feel as if there should be an epilogue or something along those lines after the story ended.
Not the best manga in the world, but something to read if you're in an 80's-manga mood. Anything by Hagio is worth a look at.show more
