The campanile of St. Mark's cathedral 320 feet in height collapsed July 14, 1902, after standing for more than 1,000 years as one of the great architectural treasures of Europe. The old bell tower had long been known to be unsafe and on the 13th inst. a longitudinal crack was discovered in the corner of the wall facing the clock tower. A concert which was to have been given in the evening on the piazza was stopped by order of the prefect, and it was decided that the work of repairs should begin the next day. But the stones within the tower began falling at about 10:40 a. m., and tourists, workmen and shop keepers in the vicinity fled for their lives. "The campanile is falling" was the cry that rang through the city, but before it was fully comprehended the work of destruction was complete.
