"The Healing of Teddy Bears," by a psychotherapist and one-time Christian pastor, is a collection of essays addressing the dissatisfactions many experience with faith founded on externalized authority, whether papal, biblical, Islamic, or charismatic. Mr. Nickerson's essays are sympathetic to the pain often involved in a shift of faith to an internalized authority grounded in experience, individuality, intuition, and personal responsibility. He defines faith as a "dynamic, ongoing process." Much of "Teddy Bears" is illustrated and underlined by stories from the author's personal journey from Christian fundamentalism to what many would call personal mysticism. He believes authentic faith requires creativity, imagination, and a kind of "innocence of heart" to maintain its vitality and personal accountability. Such a faith is likely to be unpredictable, but far from capricious. Mr. Nickerson is particularly interested in the issues of illness, aging, and mortality, and how we often shape and create a less public, but deeper and more personal faith, out of such experiences. The author jokingly says, "There's something in this book to offend everybody!" But it can also be said, "There's something about this book that will encourage anybody."show more
