Review Text

Cody's new case for London-based private eye Anna Lee (often-irreverent employee at Briefly Security) is offbeat, a little circuitous-and ultimately very satisfying: the best entry in this series since Cody's award winning Dupe debut. It all begins as a missing-persons case: where is brilliant teen-ager Thea Hahn, a quiet, repressed whiz-kid who has vanished from her parents' posh home? Well, Thea soon turns up, down near Southampton - but she's now completely mad, a mixture of catatonic and hysterical. So Anna, looking for clues to Thea's puzzling derangement, tries to reconstruct the girl's movements during her disappearance. Unfortunately, this investigation quickly suggests that Thea was somehow involved in the shooting death (suicide? murder?) of an unidentified guest at a Southampton hotel. And it's only when Anna (thanks to her kind heart as much as her smart sleuthing) identifies the mystery-corpse that she begins peeling away layer after layer of subterfuge - solving the mysteries of the disappearance, the shooting, and (to some extent) Thea's madness. Anna, tough but softhearted, has never been more appealing - whether doing hard-nosed interrogations of sleazy hotel employees or deflecting the seductive moves of a shaggy poet. As before, her colleagues and neighbors provide charming vignettes along the way. And the pathos of Thea's situation provides an affecting center for this touching, amusing, neatly plotted novel.
