Review Text

On open throttle out of Gower Street (1973) those two scrappy early 19th century London urchins, Lilith and Abel, who clawed their ways to separate pinnacles as actress and surgeon, continue their once passionate love, now soured to hate - this time through their children. Jonah, Abel's son by his timid ill-treated wife, balks at a career in medicine, and slips away to the theatre where who but the lovely Lilith sings her siren song. Celia, unlike her mother Lilith, is a sweet, kind girl who sets out to rescue Jonah from a whale of a seduction, and Abel's sensible daughter Abigail defies her dominating father to pursue a gentle pharmacist. It all leads up to a bi-family confrontation, for which the reader, once midstream, can hardly wait. Some solid arcane medical knowledge, and convincing stage business embellishes a richly gossipy family tangle and street scenes both toff and steamy. Will surely satisfy the Delderfield sector.
