Review Text

"Goodness gracious:" is this the man who wrote (with his brother Karel) bitter prophecies of the advent of totalitarianism? No other - in a succession of sight gags And little lessons on kindness and generosity, featuring two cartoon characters, Puss and Pup (and Mr. Cagek himself on occasion). Typical of the gags are Puss and Pup hanging themselves on the line to dry and a long tee-hee about Pup's torn trousers; typical of the bathos is the story of the proud nightie who was humbled by the Plain nightie, of the neglected dolly that Puss and Pup adopted: "We shall have to look after her much better than that naughty girl who was so careless and left her lying about." Mr. Capek's memory is little honored by these nursery tales of another time, another place. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
