Review Text

Professor Wagenknecht has practiced his psychography on Dickens, Twain and Jenny Lind. His method, again employed here on Mrs. Stowe, is to immerse himself in the novels, letters, diaries, theses, etc. and to organize a view of the subject which emphasizes the social and psychological influences producing a behavior pattern; in which the creative impulse is traced to sources through evidence sometimes provided in the creations themselves. What this psychographic method precludes is a chronological record and what you get here is Harriet Beecher Stowe in slices - as friend, sister, wife mother and writer. It is a method that necessitates a degree of repetition and and a continous shift backward and forward in time. While general readers may consider the effort too great and content themselves with the popular treatment of Johanna Johnston in 1963's Runaway to Heaven, students will continue to find the Wagenknecht approach both handy and helpful.
