The solution is then diluted to the mark, shaken, a portion filtered through a dry filter, measured out with a pipette, and the excess of ferrous salt estimated with bichromate. The reaction between the ferrous hydrate and the mercuric oxide in the alkaline solution is as follows: Mohr, Titrirmethode. 2HgO + 2Fe(OH)2 + H,0 = Hg,0 + Fe, (OH), Ferrous ammonium sulphate x.5102 = Hg "x.6911 = HgC1, Mercurous salts may be converted into mercuric chloride by precipitating them as mercurous chloride by means of a solution of sodium chloride, washing the chloride, adding sodium hydrate, and passing chlorine through the solution. The solution is then acidified with hydrochloric acid and evaporated to expel the excess of chlorine. Mercuric salts are converted into the chloride by evaporating with hydrochloric acid. In evaporating solutions of mercuric chloride, care must be taken not to allow them to boil, as in that case some of the chloride goes off with the steam. (Fresenius.) With Potassium Cyanide The mercury must be present as mercuric chloride. Ammonia is added until a considerable amount of a white precipitate has formed (an excess of ammonia does no harm). A solution of potassium cyanide is then added until the precipitate re. dissolves and leaves the liquid perfectly clear.
