A compendium of detailed strategies for using nutritional interventions to ameliorate a host of age-related disorders and an evidence-based review of what intervention are and are not effective. These range from the effects of nutrition on the aging eye, the sense of taste and smell, hearing loss, sarcopenia, and dementia, to the clinical role of nutrition in vascular and pulmonary disorders, cancer, immunity, endocrine and alimentary tract disorders, and renal and musculoskeletal disorders. The authors present the physiological basis for each disorder, provide the latest information about the interaction of nutrition with each condition, and review the potential routes and mechanisms for clinical intervention. All clinical chapters conclude with a summary of practical applications and treatment guidelines for secondary prevention, management, and therapy.

Review quote

The editors, both highly respected in geriatric nutrition, have brought together legends in this field to produce an excellent handbook. This text excels in its thorough approach to important topics. Cutting-edge geriatric and nutrition sciences are infused with practical management concepts, making this text a valuable resource. Management is addressed thoroughly, going beyond traditional prescribed diets or a simplistic supplements approach. Misconceptions that are pervasive in nutritional and geriatric care are refreshingly corrected. The test is exceptionally well organized and rigorously referenced, and it includes a comprehensive index to facilitate use as a reference handbook. Annals of Internal Medicine covers recent advances and also acts as a manual of well-practiced techniques. This should appeal particularly to the uninitiated but contains several articles of interest to more experienced practitioners. As well as being an excellent guide, this volume in its entirety makes a strong case for the advantages in the application of these post-genomic technologies. Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry This book does a very credible job at reviewing what is known about nutrition in older persons. The handbook is a comprehensive and practical resource, offering practicing clinicians an up-to-date compendium of advice on appropriate nutritional therapies for older adults with chronic diseases and medical conditions. The material presented here is especially complete. Each chapter is well referenced and the book is thoroughly indexed. The Handbook of Clinical Nutrition and Aging should be in all health sciences libraries supporting geriatrics education and practice. E-STREAMS
